Application Components

The Revson Fellowship will not be accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Revson Fellowship strongly advises all applicants to review thoroughly all sections of “Applying to the Fellowship” and the frequently asked questions which provide more detailed information about the application and selection process.

Application

The online application consists of five parts:

  • Part I, Personal Information Form
  • Part II, Personal Essay
  • Part III, Proposed Program of Study and Fellowship Essay
  • Part IV, Letters of Recommendation
  • Part V, Supplementary Material (optional

Part I: Personal Information Form

Applicants will be asked to provide information related to their educational and employment history.  This information must be completed even if you intend to submit a resume. Once the application is submitted, you will not be able to edit the information you provided. If your contact information or employment status changes after you submit your application, please contact the Revson Fellowship Office.

Part II: Personal Essay

In a brief typewritten essay of no more than 1,000 words, describe your previous work in New York City. You may emphasize aspects of your personal biography, your profession or vocation, and/or your broader involvement in the city.

You will be able to upload your essay as a Word Document or PDF through the online application system.

Part III: Program of Study and Fellowship Essay

In a second typewritten essay of no more than 1,000 words, outline a program of study for an academic year at Columbia University.

Your essay should address the following:

  1. Begin your essay by stating two questions that you would explore during your Fellowship in order to advance your ability to contribute to New York City. Describe your overall objectives during the academic year. For example, would you use the time to reflect on a set of social issues? Would you develop particular skills (e.g. writing, language training? Would you re-chart your own professional development? Would you produce a written product (e.g. memoir, book, articles) or media product (e.g. video, CD)?
  2. Please specify which University resources you would use to achieve your goals (e.g. particular courses, faculty, archives, and libraries). Please be specific.
  3. Address how a year of study at Columbia and interaction with a cohort of Revson Fellows would contribute to your professional or vocational work after the Fellowship is completed.

Part IV: Letters of Recommendation

The Revson Fellowship requires two letters of recommendation. At least one should come from someone in a leadership position who is familiar with your contributions. The other may be written by anyone who knows you and your work well. Letters written by family members or friends are not appropriate for the purposes of this application.

A maximum of four recommendation letters may be submitted but only two are required.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that letters are received by the deadline. Please give your recommenders plenty of time to write a letter on your behalf and follow up with them regarding the status of the letter. Your application will not be considered complete until two letters of recommendation are received.

Recommenders may submit their letters either electronically or in paper form. We encourage applicants to use the online recommendation system as it allows you to check the status of your letter. If your recommender prefers to submit a letter on your behalf in paper form, please print out the Recommendation Letter Form from the online application system and give it to your recommender. When you enter your recommender’s name in the online application, indicate that the letter will be submitted through the mail.

Part V: Supplementary Material

Applicants may submit a maximum of ten pages of supplementary material, and only if this material is essential to the application. Supplementary material may include your resume, articles written by you or about you, photos of your artwork, etc. You will have the opportunity to upload your supplementary material as a Word Document or PDF through the online application system.

If you would like to submit a book, CD, or another form of material that cannot be uploaded, you may mail it to the Fellowship Office. Please clearly label the material with your name and a description of the item. Supplementary material will not be returned to applicants. We cannot guarantee that all members of the Selection Committee will review this material.
