"The opportunity to write something not for a funder, not a proposal, not an “outcome-driven” success story, not focused on the numbers, not a new formula for crunching the numbers: it was delicious. It felt like sanity. Like my mind returning to my mind."

Gerson Borrero

Editor in Chief
El Diario-La Prensa

Gerson Borrero, described by the New York Daily News as "one of the most knowledgeable political observers of the Latin community," is a seasoned journalist who knows where the stories in this town are--and what they mean to the Latino populace". Television and radio producers and conference coordinators often call upon him for his often controversial views and opinions that help define the overall partisan political landscape. Mr. Borrero was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, but has lived in New York City for more than four decades. For the past eight years, he has authored a popular, sharply worded, award-winning column in El Diario-La Prensa, the tri-state's leading Spanish language newspaper. In April 2000, he was named the newspaper's Editor in Chief, where he spearheaded a newsroom of forty-five experienced, creative and talented editors, reporters and photographers. In addition to serving on El Diario's editorial board, he also was a member of the Publisher's Executive Committee. On September 29, 2003 he resigned his top Editor job after the new owners of the 90 year old paper vetoed the publication of a column by Cuban President Fidel Castro. Mr. Borrero resumed writing his Bajo Fuego column for the paper on November 3, 2003. His column now appears three times a week on Monday, Wednsday and Friday. Until mid-July 2002, Mr. Borrero produced and hosted a four-hour, morning radio program on Noticias 1380 AM, a leading Spanish radio station in the metro area. His thought provoking, no sacred cows approach earned him high regard among the station's listeners and industry recognition including Talkers Magazine 2002 "Heavy 100" list of Most Important Radio Hosts in the country and the 2001 Hispanic Media 100 Awards. Awards such as the 2000 Achievement In Radio Award for Best Hispanic on Air Personality in New York and the 1999 GLOBO Award for Best Talk Radio Program, were given to Mr. Borrero for his top-rated, drive-time afternoon program on WADO 1280 AM, which he produced and hosted for 2 1/2 years. The often-polemic journalist also wrote weekly commentaries for Cablevision's News 12 in The Bronx, published community newspapers and owned a marketing and public relations firm. His extraordinary commitment to the Latino community was most notable during his nine-year tenure as a founding vice president of the Institute for Puerto Rican Policy, a non-profit "Think Tank," that issued reports on public policies of concern to the community at large. Mr. Borrero is married to Ruth Noemi Colon and has two children: Taina, 20, and Gerson Felipe, 6.
